Worldwide, about 0.5 million deaths are attibutable to drug use. More than 70% of these deaths are related to opioids, with more than 30% of those deaths caused by overdose.- W.H.O. World Health Organization

Dentistry is a very high contributor to this crisis. Alternative non-pharmacologic therapies are available to minimize or eliminate the need to prescribe opioids to our dental patients. Photobiomodulation treatment is one such evidence based therapy, used to reduce post operative pain and edema, and hasten healing. 

Based on our recent course surveys, dental professionals described "ice packs" as the only alternative non-pharmacologic therapy available in their toolkit, and 87% had little to zero knowledge of photobiomodulation therapy.
