TITLE: Nutrition and Oral Health: The Bi-directional Link Driving the Oral Microbiome, Periodontal Outcomes and Healing

COURSE SUMMARY: 

This evidence-based continuing education webinar explores the critical role of nutrition in oral and systemic health, equipping dental professionals with clinically relevant strategies to identify, manage, and communicate nutrition-related risk factors. Participants will examine how dietary patterns influence the oral microbiome, caries development, periodontal disease progression, inflammation, wound healing, xerostomia, and implant success.

The course also connects nutrition to systemic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and immune dysfunction—highlighting the dental professional’s role in early detection and patient education. Attendees will leave with practical tools to integrate nutritional screening, risk assessment, and patient communication into daily clinical workflows.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 

  • Understand and define the significance of the bi-directional relationship of nutrition  to oral health

  • Define the importance of nutrition to the integrity of the oral cavity and the impact of oral disease on nutritional status

  • Discuss digestive disorders and treatment relative oral health

  • Explain how nutrition influences the oral microbiome and shifts toward dysbiosis or health

  • Identify key nutrients essential for gingival integrity, collagen production, and immune response

  • Recognize how nutritional deficiencies contribute to periodontal breakdown and bone loss

  • Evaluate the role of nutrition in post-operative healing, including extractions and implant integration

  • Correlate dietary patterns with chronic inflammation and delayed clinical outcomes

  • Implement simple, chairside strategies to identify and address nutrition-related risk factors

Dr. Kirsten Roling, DDS

Dr. Kirsten Roling, DDS, serves as the Chief Education Officer for Dental CE Academy, She completed her dental training at the University of California, San Francisco, during the critical period of the HIV/AIDS Pandemic. Prior to her achievement as a dentist she was a Registered Dental Assistant and dental practice management consultant. As a public health dentist, Dr. Roling is recognized as an early pioneer of Teledentistry, formerly in clinical practice that encompassed both pediatrics and geriatrics. Her previous roles include Assistant Clinical Professor at UCSF and Public Health Preceptor at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health. Additionally, she served as Chief of the Office of Oral Health for Maricopa County's Department of Public Health, where she managed the nation's largest pediatric oral health prevention programs within the third largest public health department in the U.S. As a mobile dental provider, she led a mobile practice focused on treating homebound geriatric patients and is a recipient of the Pediatric Oral Health Access Program scholarship. She is published in the Journal of Public Health Dentistry, and notably a #cdiffsurvivor
