COURSE SUMMARY: This continuing education webinar explores the intricate and bidirectional relationship between the oral and gut microbiomes—two of the most complex microbial ecosystems in the human body. Dental professionals will gain an understanding of how dysbiosis in one system can influence inflammation, immunity, and disease progression in the other, contributing to systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders. The course will also discuss clinical strategies to promote oral and gut microbial balance for improved patient outcomes.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:  Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the composition and function of the oral and gut microbiomes and their interconnected roles in health and disease.

  • Explain the biological mechanisms that link oral microbial dysbiosis to systemic inflammation and gut imbalance.

  • Identify clinical signs and risk factors indicating oral-gut microbial dysregulation.

  • Discuss the evidence linking oral and gut microbiota to systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and neuroinflammation.

  • Apply evidence-based strategies—including oral care, nutrition, and probiotic interventions—to promote microbial balance and improve patient outcomes.

  • Evaluate current and emerging research on microbiome modulation and its implications for preventive and therapeutic dental practice.
