COURSE SUMMARY:  Xerostomia or Dry Mouth is the fastest growing oral health condition affecting 25% of adults in the U.S. In this online, live, webinar we will learn the causes of xerostomia, the consequences of untreated dry mouth,  what dental clinicians can do to prevent its devastation, and special considerations in the geriatric population. Diagnosing xerostomia can be an important diagnostic tool for other systemic diseases, and assessing the patient's overall health and well-being. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 

  • Understand and define xerostomia

  • Describe the oral anatomy and physiology related to salivary function

  • Know the role of saliva

  • Recognize at risk populations for developing xerostomia

  • Develop and prescribe short-term and long-term treatment options

Dr. Kirsten Roling, DDS

Dr. Roling, DDS is the Chief Education Officer for Dental CE Academy.  She completed dental school training at the University of California, San Francisco; during the height of the HIV/AIDS Pandemic. Dr. Roling is a public health dentist, credited as an early pioneer of Teledentistry. Her clinical practice spans pediatrics to geriatrics. Previously an Assistant Clinical Professor, UCSF; and Public Health Preceptor, Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health, Dr. Roling also held the position as Chief for the Office of Oral Health, Maricopa County, Department of Public Health where she administered the nation's largest pediatric oral health prevention programs for the third largest U.S. public health department. As a mobile dental provider, she commanded a large teledentistry practice to treat homebound geriatric patients. She is a recipient of the Pediatric Oral Health Access Program (POHAP) scholarship and provided dental services to at risk infants and foster children. She has completed certification through the American Dental Education Association in conjunction with the Academy of Academy Leadership and Institute. She is published in the Journal of Public Health Dentistry.
