COURSE SUMMARY: ANTIBIOTICS 2024. COMPREHENSIVE TRAINING. PROPHYLAXIS, CLINICAL USE, STEWARDSHIP.

Antibiotics have improved health outcomes since the discovery of penicillin and its widespread use during WW II. However, their overuse and misuse has now threatened their effectiveness and led to superbug infections that are untreatable, as well as an increase in antibiotic associated Clostridium difficile infections.  This training will provide antibiotic stewardship guidance and cover the risks of inappropriate antibiotic use, including antibiotic resistance. It will also review the latest ADA Clinical Practice Guidelines related to when antibiotics are appropriate for patients with odontogenic infections. Prescribing recommendations as well as when and why antibiotics are indicated or not indicated will be covered.  Sample prescriptions will be provided.  The topic of antibiotic prophylaxis related to prosthetic joints, cardiac conditions, bone marrow transplants and many other medical conditions will be covered so you will be confident you are treating these patients appropriately.  Additionally, best practices for antibiotic use for extractions, minor oral surgery, implant placement and periodontal therapy will be reviewed.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Understand the current Clinical Practice Guidelines for antibiotic prophylaxis and antibiotic use for odontogenic infections.

  2. Understand the risks and benefits of antibiotic use including antibiotic resistance and C. diff infection.

  3. Understand and be able to implement antibiotic stewardship practices in your practice.

  4. Understand oral bacteremia and the association with distant site infections.

  5. Understand how antibiotic prophylaxis affects oral bacteremia and distant site infections.

  6. Understand the biology and physiology of prosthetic joint infections and infective endocarditis.

  7. Understand best practices for antibiotic use for extractions, implant placement, periodontal root planing and other dental procedures.
